Our History

The MAX DYE, INC. story began in 1938 when Kelly Dye started his automotive career as a salesperson in Fairfield, Illinois. Just one year later, he became a dealership owner, beginning a family tradition that has continued for more than eight decades. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Kelly Dye expanded into several automotive brands while building a reputation for honesty, hard work, and exceptional customer service.

After Kelly Dye's passing in 1959, his wife Genevieve and sons, Max and Jerry, continued operating the family business. In 1964, Max Dye opened a dealership in Salem, Illinois, which would eventually grow into today's MAX DYE, INC. Over the years, the dealership expanded its lineup to include GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram while overcoming challenges, including rebuilding after a devastating fire in 1989. Today, the business continues under multiple generations of the Dye family, remaining committed to serving customers with the same values that built the dealership.

• 1938 - Kelly Dye begins his automotive career.
• 1939 - Opens his first automobile dealership in Flora, Illinois.
• 1940 - Becomes a Buick and GMC Truck dealer.
• 1945-1956 - Expands into multiple franchises, including Ford, Studebaker, and Lincoln Mercury.
• 1964 - Max Dye opens the dealership in Salem, Illinois.
• 1966 - GMC Trucks added to the dealership lineup.
• 1976 - New dealership facility opens near Interstate 57.
• 1989 - Dealership facility is destroyed by fire.
• 1990 - New facility is rebuilt, and Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge franchises are added.
• 1997 - Jeep joins the dealership family.
• 2015 - Kenny Detmer joins the family business.
• Today - Multiple generations continue operating MAX DYE, INC. while providing outstanding customer service.
